ACI Worldwide research shows that the theft of payment card data used for online purchases is likely to rise during the holiday season in response to the increased use of chip cards for in-store purchases.

According to Reuters, ACI found that “fraud rates by volume for transactions that don't involve physically swiping a card have increased in 2015, with one out of every 86 transactions a fraudulent attempt compared with one out of 114 transactions in 2014.”

“This is a prime example of why we need a strong data security standard for retailers,” said NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger. “Chip cards are a good step forward but no single technology is a panacea when it comes to preventing data breaches. We have already begun to see fraudsters target other points of weakness. A national standard for retailers is the only way to effectively cover all bases.”
